Mark your calendars: It's time for your car's routine maintenance check! Wait? What's supposed to happen? Is the oil supposed to be changed? Should the battery be tested twice a year and the windshield wipers changed once? Yikes! Let us help you unscramble the who, what, and when of routine vehicle maintenance once and for all. Why? To help you get the longest life possible out of your vehicle, of course.
3,000 to 7,000 Miles
Your basic maintenance check should be done every 3,000 to 7,000 miles, depending on your vehicle (check the owner's manual). This involves the most common maintenance tasks, including changing the oil and oil filter, topping off fluids, evaluating the condition of your tires and windshield wipers, and making sure your exterior lights are still shining.
15,000 to 30,000 Miles
Every 15,000 to 30,000 miles, your vehicle will need more in-depth maintenance care. At 15,000 miles the air filter should be replaced; at 20,000 miles you should inspect the coolant to see if it needs to be flushed and refilled. The 25,000-mile mark should serve as a reminder to replace the fuel filter, and at 30,000 miles it is time to flush and replenish the power steering fluid. This is also a good time to have your HVAC system, suspension system, radiator hose, and brake pads checked as well.
35,000 to 50,000 Miles
The battery should be tested every 35,000 miles and replaced when necessary. Between 40,000 and 50,000 miles you should look into getting new spark plugs and spark plug wires and should have the ignition system checked.Â
60,000 Miles
Every 60,000 miles, your vehicle will need a little more love. By this time, you should be back to your 15,000- and 30,000-mile maintenance evaluations (and probably your basic inspection as well). You should anticipate changing your brake pads and fluid, coolant, radiator hoses, and timing belt. This can be a more expensive time when it comes to the maintenance of your vehicle, but ignoring this mile-stone could result in more expensive repairs later.
